ICOM Director General Dr Anne-Catherine Robert-Hauglustaine participated in a Seminar on Professional Ethics from 21 to 23 July in Gaoua and Loropéni, Burkina Faso. Speaking before 120 museum professionals from all over the country on 22 July, she presented ICOM and its work, focusing specifically on the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums. Dr. Robert-Hauglustaine congratulated Burkina Faso on its thriving museum sector and reflected on ethical questions for museums and the public.
Mr. Alassane Waongo, President of ICOM Burkina and Heritage Manager of the National Museum of Burkina Faso, spoke at the seminar as well, pointing out the reciprocal support provided by his country and ICOM for Burkinabe museums and special projects. He praised ICOM’s growing involvement in Sub-Saharan Africa, giving the ICOM Director General’s presence at the seminar as a prime example.
During her trip, the ICOM Director General met with H.E. Mr. Baba Hama, Minister of Culture and Tourism, who conveyed his support for the importance of museums and heritage as well as the role played by ICOM in the country. She also visited the Ruins of Loropéni, a stone fortress dating back at least 1,000 years, which is the first Burkinabe site to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Along with the other seminar participants, Dr. Robert-Hauglustaine was invited to the residence of the King of the Gans, who expressed pleasure to welcome such a large group of museum professionals to his region.
Impressed by the status of museums and cultural heritage in the country, the ICOM Director General pointed out that "with around 30 museums, 8 of which are in development, Burkina Faso upholds the place of museums and culture in society.”
