Thanks to the generous support of the Getty Foundation, Los Angeles, the Fundación Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and the Gwangju Biennale Foundation CIMAM offers 24 grants to support the attendance of modern and contemporary art curators and museum or collection directors to CIMAM’s 2015 Annual Conference, How Global can Museums be? that will be held in Tokyo, 7–9 November 2015.

Elegibility

Grants are restricted to modern and contemporary art curators and museum or collection directors in need of financial help to attend CIMAM’s Annual Conference. Researchers and independent curators whose field of research and specialization is contemporary art theory, collections and museums are also eligible. While professionals of all career levels are encouraged to apply, priority is given to junior professionals (less than 10 years’ experience). Applicants having received CIMAM grants from the same grant contributor will not be considered for a new grant before 3 years.

The support received from the Getty Foundation has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of ICOM.

→ The Gwangju Biennale Foundation supports 4 travel grants to modern and contemporary art museum and collection curators and directors residing in South Korea.

Purpose of the grant

The support is limited to cover conference registration*, travel expenses (round trip economy tickets only) and accommodation in one of the hotels recommended by CIMAM. Distribution of funds is set on a case-by-case basis for each recipient. Funds are exclusively related to support the purpose for which the grant has been awarded.

*Conference registration includes access to all conference sessions, conference lunches, dinners, refreshment breaks, access to organized visits and coach service to and from planned visits. All registered delegates also receive a copy of the conference program and a courtesy tote bag. Funds will not cover registration and expenses related with the post-conference tour.

Application Process

Candidates are invited to complete an online application form and include a CV, a short biography, a motivation statement and two letters of recommendation by professionals or scholars who are familiar with the candidate’s qualifications.

Selection Process

Travel grant applications are evaluated by the CIMAM Selection Committee consisting of the President of CIMAM and eight members of the Board together with the Getty Foundation, the Fundación Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and the Gwangju Biennale Foundation.

Fellowships are conferred based on the assessment of the professional’s genuine financial need, the potential benefit to his development and/or research and the relevance of field experience in relation to the objectives of CIMAM.

Gwangju Biennale Foundation

Founded in 1995 in memory of spirits of civil uprising of the 1980 repression of the Gwangju Democratization Movement, the Gwangju Biennale is Asia’s oldest and most prestigious biennial of contemporary art. Under the helm of previous curators that include Nancy Adajania, Wassan Al-Khudhairi, Kerry Brougher, Sukwon Chang, Okwui Enwezor, Charles Esche, Massimiliano Gioni, Hou Hanru, Mami Kataoka, Sunjung Kim, Honghee Kim, Yongwoo Lee, Youngchul Lee, Carol Yinghua Lu, Jessica Morgan, Kwangsoo Oh, Wankyoung Sung, Alia Swastika, and Harald Szeemann, the Gwangju Biennale has established itself as a highlight of the international contemporary art biennale circuit.

Centered on the Biennale Hall in Gwangju’s Jungoui Park, the presence has elevated the city of 1.4 million to become a cultural hub of East Asia. It is home to some of the best-preserved cultural relics in the nation, and is known locally as the “City of Art, Cuisine and Culture.” Previous editions of Biennales went under the titles Beyond the borders(1995), Unmapping the Earth(1997), Man +Space(2000), Pause(2002), A Grain of Dust, A Drop of Water(2004), Fever Variations(2006), Annual Report : A year in Exhibitions(2008), 10000 Lives (2010), ROUNDTABLE(2012) and Burning Down the House (2014).
