Die Österreichische Gesellschaft für Exilforschung (öge) und deren Frauen-AG laden Forschende aller Disziplinen zur internationalen Konferenz ‚Doing Gender in Exile‘ ein, die vom 18.-20. Oktober 2017 in der Aula am Campus der Universität Wien stattfindet (Konferenzsprachen DE + EN). Mit dem Thema ‚Doing Gender in Exile‘ soll das Exil als Labor für die Transformation von Geschlechtlichkeit und sexuellen Identitäten neu in den Blick genommen werden. Die Tagung nimmt Exilsituationen aufgrund des Nationalsozialismus und der europäischen Faschismen im 20. Jahrhundert als Ausgangspunkt, ist aber offen für die vergleichende Bearbeitung anderer Formen des Exils und Fluchtbewegungen (z.B. auch „innere Emigration“), regionaler und transnationaler Aspekte und die neue Aktualität der Thematik.

Call for Papers: ‚Doing Gender in Exile‘. Vienna, Oct. 18-20, 2017

The Austrian Society for Exile Studies and its working-group on women’s exile (Frauen-AG) invite contributions from a wide range of disciplines for the conference ‘Doing Gender in Exile’ which will be held at the Aula of the University of Vienna in October 2017.

‘Doing Gender in Exile’ seeks to approach exile as a space of experimentation or ‘laboratory’ for the transformation of gender and sexual identities, with the aim of encouraging new perspectives on the subject. The conference will focus primarily on exile situations resulting from National Socialism and other forms of European totalitarianism in the 20th century, but also welcomes contributions addressing alternative forms of exile and migration (e.g. inner emigration), regional and transnational aspects, as well as comparisons to contemporary phenomena of mass migration and displacement.

We explicitly encourage analyses of sex/gender in the context of exile and transnationality that go beyond single-person biographies. Following the conferences in London (‘Exile and Gender’) and Berlin (‘Flüchtige Geschichte und geistiges Erbe’) in September and October 2014, ‘Doing Gender in Exile’ will further develop this perspective as a method in Exile Studies.
