Organised by the Natural History Museum Vienna as part of the Skills4EOSC Horizon Europe project, this two-day event targets data curators and RDM leaders seeking to gain the skills necessary to digitise and FAIRify Open Scientific Collections and willing to contribute to further dissemination of Open Science (OS) skills in their communities. The event provides a comprehensive overview of strategies, methodologies, and tools essential for applying OS principles and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data standards to digital collections across LAM institutions (Libraries, Archives, and Museums) and universities.

The training is structured around four core modules, each consisting of lessons and case studies, with contributions from a wide range of experts in the field:

Module 1: Planning and Strategy
Participants will gain knowledge of the FAIR data and OS principles, alongside the policy and legal contexts that support these principles. This module focuses on strategies for implementing Open Collections practices within LAM institutions, as well as understanding the training requirements for developing essential skills in these areas.

Module 2: Data Digitisation, Processing, and Preservation
This module provides practical insights into managing Collections as Data, including how to apply OS principles to digital collections. It emphasizes data management best practices, data quality, long-term preservation, and the technical aspects of data transformation, migration, and version control. Additionally, participants will learn to advocate for good data management practices across various stakeholders.

Module 3: Sharing: Making Library, Archive & Museum Collections FAIR
Participants will explore how to apply FAIR principles to digital collections and related digital objects. This module covers standards, ontologies, and tools for metadata publishing and sharing, while addressing the challenges of providing open access to collections.

Module 4: Data Governance – Legal and Ethical Considerations
This module focuses on the ethical and legal aspects of managing digital collections, including intellectual property rights, personal data protection, decolonisation of collections and the responsible reuse of digital objects. It also introduces sustainable business models for resource pooling and coordination across services.

Participants will be encouraged to perform additional self-paced assessments after concluding the two-day event through the Skills4EOSC learning platform, which aim to test the acquired knowledge and the competencies to further disseminate this training in their work areas. Only upon completion of the assessments, the trainee will acquire the Master Trainer badge from the Skills4EOSC project. Participation solely in the live sessions is allowed, but will only provide a certificate of attendance and not the Master Trainer certificate.

All in all, this event provides an opportunity for participants to engage with best practices, gain experience with relevant case studies, and build essential skills to advance the digitisation and FAIRification of Open Scientific Collections in their institutions and working field.
