Digital Research Coordinator

 

The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, an institute of the Max Planck Society, is one of the world-leading research institutes for art history. With its two departments, its various research groups and projects, its specialized library and photo library, as well as a dense network of international collaborations, the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz is dedicated to the study of European, Mediterranean, and global histories of art, visual and material cultures. As a major hub for international scholars that is engaged in transdisciplinary dialogues, the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz constantly develops and reassesses its research agenda. Under such premises, the institute requires: a) a fundamental optimization in architecture, design, and performance of its digital infrastructure, and b) the realization of research projects and collaborations with a strong and experimental digital dimension.

 

The position of the Digital Research Coordinator will be a full-time job limited to an initial period of three years, with the prospective of becoming a permanent position.

 

The successful candidate will be a skilled software developer with a deep understanding of scholarship in the humanities, preferably in art history or related fields. In a cooperative working environment, the candidate will play a role in decision-making and will be credited as a co-author on digital scholarship projects.

 

The core duties are:

- elaborating and coordinating the implementation of cutting-edge solutions for the digital infrastructure of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz;

- identifying technical approaches, processes, and tools for digital scholarship;

- providing inter-divisional digital research consultancy and support to the departments, the various project groups, the library, and the photo library;

- coordinating the adoption of standards and best practice strategies regarding data digitization, as well as archival and web-based access/retrieval;

- actively participating in methodological discussions on digital humanities, as well as conferences, and meetings with the institute's international cooperation;

- promoting and representing the institute's projects.

   

      

We are seeking a candidate with a degree in a scientific discipline (computer science/engineering/mathematics) and profound experience in digital humanities and art history, or a candidate with a degree in humanities and a documented expertise on digital technologies.

 

We expect a high degree of organizational, teamwork, and communication skills, a structured and responsible work approach, and the ability to learn new techniques on the job.

 

Working language will be mostly English, Italian and German are optional.

- payment pursuant to the German labor agreement for the public services (TVöD) in pay group EG 14  (if requirements are met);
